Getting Started AGAIN…

We all know it, and it happens to us at least some point. You feel like you are in a groove with training, improving and getting where you want to be. Might even feel like you have it all together and that of course feels good! AND THEN BANG. LIFE. IT HAPPENS.

It might be the birth of a child or a change in jobs, it could even be the summer holidays or an injury. The reason for it matters not so much as simply knowing, THAT IT HAPPENS. We all feel like we have ‘fallen off the wagon’ at some point, we all feel lacking in motivation and time some weeks and we all have to learn how to get back to it.

Yet the getting back to it can be the tough part. The part where your mind tells you all the places and things that you ‘used’ to be able to do, and that in itself is enough to make some of us go back and sit on the sofa instead of lacing up some shoes and going on a walk. So why does it matter that it happens to all of us? Because often that little voice also says, it is just you. Knowing that this is a challenge many of us face at some point can be the differentiator between you making a difference or not.

Our hope behind this piece is to give you some practical steps to make that change, whilst also being the voice of reason in your ear right not saying… You can do it. BUT you have to be willing to give yourself grace because it might look different to what you want it to and it might look different to what you used to be able to do.

SO WE ASK YOU TO STOP… COMPARING WHAT…

. Movements you used to be able to do before you had time off for whatever reason

. How many sessions you used to make a week BEFORE you became a parent

. You managed to achieve prior to what you can do now

Then give yourself chance to see that there is not one way to achieve your goals in the gym. Coming to the gym 5 times a week is great for some people, but not realistic for others. BUT the trick is, you don’t have to come 5 times a week to achieve your goals. (PS you could come once and trust us when we say, you will still see some changes). Being able to train without injury is not the only way to get to PBs, in fact many high level athletes come back stronger after an injury because it forces them work their weaknesses whilst in recovery. So don’t count yourself out if you can’t train the way you used to be able to. We could go on forever about all the circumstances and situations where this thought process applies, but let us give you this to connect to your own experience.

Whatever it is that you think is ‘not good enough’, ‘not enough time’, ‘not enough effort’. . . Ask yourself why?

Then ask yourself…

If I made one session a week, would it help me to feel fitter?

If you stopped looking at what you can do over what you can’t do, what you feel better?

Notice a theme…

It isn’t what you can’t do that is the problem. That is stopping you from achieving your goals. It is your own thought process getting in the way of you even trying. So look at what you say to yourself and see if you can switch it too ask yourself..

But what can I do? Because something is better than nothing.
